There are four categories of loose diamonds that are pretty much the international method to give them value. Although some places in the world may use other methods, the four Cs of diamonds are a universal way to figure out how much a diamond is worth.

The cut of the stone is the first C and has everything to do with the overall shape of the stone and the facets within the stone. Diamonds should only be cut by a professional who has lots of experience. Since this process is so tedious, there is no room for error at all. Some examples of diamond cuts are: Emerald, marquis, round, princess or pear.

Color is the next C of loose diamonds and refers to not only the color, but the degree of that color, especially when referring to white diamonds. White diamonds may all seem white, but that is not the case. There is a scale to rate them on exactly how white they are and when placed next to an almost flawless diamond, you can see the difference.

Clarity deals with the number of imperfections the diamond contains and carat weight tells you the exact size of the stone.
